ABA Therapy vs. Speech & Occupational Therapy: What's the Difference?

Navigating the Therapy Alphabet Soup
Following an autism diagnosis, parents are often handed a list of recommended therapies: ABA, Speech (ST), and Occupational Therapy (OT). It can quickly feel like drowning in an "alphabet soup" of acronyms. Many parents wonder, "Do we really need all three?"
The short answer is often yes. These therapies are not mutually exclusive; they are highly complementary. Here is a breakdown of what each discipline does.
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)
ABA is the science of learning and behavior. A BCBA focuses on *why* a behavior occurs and uses positive reinforcement to teach new, functional skills. ABA is highly comprehensive. It targets communication, social skills, daily living skills (like potty training), and addresses challenging behaviors (like aggression or elopement). It is often the most intensive therapy, ranging from 10 to 40 hours per week.
Speech Therapy (ST)
Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) are the experts in the mechanics of language. They help with articulation (forming words correctly), stuttering, swallowing disorders, and the specific nuances of receptive and expressive language. While an ABA therapist might reinforce a child for saying "apple," an SLP will teach the child exactly where to place their tongue to make the 'p' sound.
Occupational Therapy (OT)
Occupational Therapists help children develop the fine motor skills, visual-motor skills, and sensory processing abilities required for daily living. If a child struggles to hold a pencil, button a shirt, or process the sensory input of a loud room, the OT provides specific exercises and "sensory diets" to help their nervous system regulate.
The Power of Collaboration
At Glowing Minds ABA, we believe in a multidisciplinary approach. Our BCBAs regularly collaborate with your child's speech and occupational therapists. If the SLP recommends a specific communication device, our ABA therapists will ensure the child practices using it multiple times a day during their intensive therapy hours. This teamwork ensures your child receives cohesive, comprehensive care.
