What is ABA Therapy?
The gold standard in autism care. Discover how Applied Behavior Analysis helps children unlock their full potential through positive reinforcement and play.
The Science of Learning and Behavior
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a scientific approach to understanding behavior. It focuses on how behaviors change, how learning takes place, and how our environment influences our actions.
When applied to autism, ABA therapy uses these principles to help children build essential life skills, improve communication, and decrease behaviors that may be harmful or interfere with learning. It is widely endorsed by the U.S. Surgeon General and the American Academy of Pediatrics as an evidence-based medical treatment.
How Does ABA Work?
At its core, ABA works by breaking down complex skills into small, manageable steps. By using positive reinforcement (like praise, a high-five, or a favorite toy), therapists encourage the child to repeat desired behaviors. Over time, these small steps build into significant, meaningful improvements.
The Core Components of an ABA Program
Individualized Assessment
A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) evaluates your child's current skills, strengths, and areas for growth to create a custom treatment plan.
Positive Reinforcement
When a behavior is followed by something valued (a reward), a person is more likely to repeat that behavior in the future.
Data-Driven Progress
Therapists take continuous data during sessions. This ensures the plan is working and allows the BCBA to make adjustments if progress slows down.
Parent Training
Parents are taught the same strategies used in therapy so they can support their child's development outside of sessions.
What ABA is NOT
There are many misconceptions about ABA. Modern, compassionate ABA therapy—the kind we practice at Glowing Minds ABA—is:
- Not a "cure" for autism. We celebrate neurodiversity. Our goal is to teach skills that promote independence and safety, not to change who your child is.
- Not robotic or rigid. Therapy should be fun! We use Natural Environment Teaching (NET) and play-based methods to keep children engaged in the real world.
- Not a one-size-fits-all approach. What works for one child may not work for another. Every single program is uniquely tailored.
