Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA)
In-depth analysis to understand the function of challenging behaviors and develop effective, positive intervention plans.
About This Program
All behavior is a form of communication. When a child exhibits challenging behaviors (such as tantrums, aggression, or self-injury), it is crucial to understand *why* the behavior is occurring.
A Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) is a systematic process we use to identify the specific triggers (antecedents) and outcomes (consequences) that maintain a behavior.
By identifying the root cause—whether it is to gain attention, escape a demand, access an item, or for sensory input—we can develop a positive Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP). This plan focuses on teaching the child safer, more effective ways to communicate those same needs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q.What is the purpose of an FBA?
The purpose is to discover the 'why' behind a behavior so we can teach a functional replacement behavior. For example, if a child cries to get a toy, we teach them how to ask for the toy using words, signs, or a device.
Q.What does the FBA process involve?
It involves interviews with caregivers, direct observation of the child in their natural environment, data collection, and careful analysis by a BCBA to determine the function of the behavior.
Q.Will you punish my child for bad behavior?
No. Modern ABA focuses on positive reinforcement. We focus on enriching the environment and reinforcing positive, alternative behaviors, making the challenging behaviors unnecessary for the child.
