Early Signs of Autism: When Should I Seek an Assessment?

Trust Your Parental Instincts

As a parent, you know your child better than anyone else. Often, parents are the first to notice that their toddler isn't hitting milestones quite like their peers or older siblings did. While every child develops at their own pace, there are specific early developmental red flags for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) that warrant professional evaluation.

Key Early Indicators (Ages 12 to 24 Months)

Autism presents differently in every child, but some of the most common early signs include:

  • Lack of Eye Contact: The child avoids eye contact or only makes fleeting eye contact when their name is called.
  • Delayed Speech: No babbling by 12 months, no single words by 16 months, or a loss of previously acquired speech (regression).
  • Limited Gestures: Not pointing at objects of interest (like an airplane in the sky) or not waving goodbye by 14 months.
  • Atypical Play: Instead of engaging in pretend play, the child might line toys up meticulously, spin the wheels on a toy car repetitively, or focus solely on parts of an object.
  • Sensory Sensitivities: Extreme reactions to loud noises, specific textures of clothing, or extreme picky eating.

Why "Wait and See" is the Wrong Approach

Historically, well-meaning pediatricians might have advised parents to "wait and see" if a child would simply outgrow a delay. However, modern neurodevelopmental research strongly advises against this. The CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics emphasize that early intervention is critical.

During the first three years of life, a child's brain experiences massive neural growth and plasticity. Initiating Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and speech therapy during this critical window can significantly improve language acquisition, cognitive abilities, and social skills, often changing the child's developmental trajectory for life.

If you have concerns, do not wait. Request a referral to a developmental pediatrician or child psychologist for a Comprehensive Diagnostic Evaluation (CDE) today.
